Three chapters that save months — or cost them.

The country pages give you the route for your own country. This page covers the three questions that go wrong across all countries — the ones where a mistake is most expensive. Every chapter names its official source and the date we last checked it.

How we work here. Every chapter names the responsible authority and the date of the last check. Where we are not certain, we say so instead of smoothing it over. Rules change — verify with the named authority before you file anything. And this is general information, not legal advice on an individual case.

Apostille or legalisation — the difference that costs months

This is the most common expensive mistake, and it usually happens because somebody took advice meant for a different country. There are two entirely different procedures, and which applies to you depends on one thing only: is your country a party to the Hague Convention?

CountryProcedureWhat it means in practice
🇮🇳 India Apostille — via the Ministry of External Affairs But in two stages: first attestation by your state (Home or Education Department), then the MEA apostille, and the MEA accepts documents only through authorised collection points. Allow 4–8 weeks.
🇲🇦 Morocco Apostille — member since 2016 A single stamp on the document. Which office issues it depends on the type of document. Allow 2–4 weeks together with translation.
🇪🇬 Egypt Legalisation — not a member Not one stamp but a chain: issuing authority → Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs → German embassy. This is the longest of the three routes. Plan considerably more time.
🇦🇪 Working in the Gulf depends on where the document was issued Your certificates were issued at home, so the chain runs through your home country, not through your country of residence.

The four mistakes we see again and again

1 · Stamp on a plain photocopy

The attestation must sit on the original or a certified copy — never on a plain photocopy. If it does, the document is worthless and the whole chain starts again.

2 · Translated first, attested second

The correct order is original → attestation → certified translation. Translate first and you end up with a translation that does not contain the stamps — and you pay the translator twice.

3 · Forgetting the hours statement

For any recognition, the subject and hours statement is the key attachment: theory and practice in hours. Many transcripts list only subjects and marks. You then need written confirmation from your college — and that takes time. Sort this out before you pay for any translation.

4 · Police certificate obtained too early

A certificate of good conduct usually may not be older than three months on the day you file. Get it at the very start and you will be holding an expired document at the end. It belongs at the end of your collection, not the beginning.

And the point people in the Gulf overlook most often: attestation you had done for your employer in the Emirates, or for the local authorities, does not replace what Germany requires. They are two different chains for two different purposes. Ask the German mission before you pay any agency.

Authoritative sources: the German mission for your country — India · Cairo · Rabat · UAE — and for recognition the ZAG-PuG NRW.

Which occupation has the shortest route? (It is not nursing)

This question is rarely asked and almost never answered honestly — because the honest answer damages some agents' business. The decisive word is regulated.

A regulated profession is one you may practise in Germany only after an authority has examined your foreign qualification and declared it equivalent. Nursing is one of them. A non-regulated occupation has no such procedure at all: there, your employer alone decides whether your qualification fits — exactly as for a German applicant.

Occupational groupRegulated? What it means for you
⚙️ Metal, electrical, mechatronics, welding, industry, many trades no No recognition procedure in order to work. You need an equivalence assessment only insofar as your residence permit requires one. The shortest route of all.
🚚 Truck driving partly No recognition procedure — but licence exchange and the basic qualification (Code 95). That is its own block, and it decides from when you may actually drive.
🩺 Nursing and health professions yes Two authorities one after the other, 6–12 months, often longer. The longest route — and the one most heavily advertised.
🎓 Vocational training in Germany its own logic School place first, then a training visa. Fixed intake: April and September. And the only route for anyone whose home qualification is less than two years of state-recognised training.

Why this matters more than it sounds

If you are a metalworker, electrician, welder or mechatronics technician and somebody tells you that you must first complete a long recognition procedure, that is either ignorance or a business model. You do not need one. What you need is German — that is the real hurdle in these occupations.

The reverse holds for nursing: if somebody promises you a fast route, something is wrong. Two authorities acting in sequence cannot be shortened — but they can be prepared in parallel, and that is the difference between twelve months and eighteen.

Check your own occupation, not the one in the advertisement. On the federal portal anerkennung-in-deutschland.de you can enter your occupation and get the answer directly from the responsible body — in English and other languages. It is free and takes five minutes.

What the route really costs — and who pays what

Most lists online mention only the visa fee. That is the smallest item. Here are all of them, including the uncomfortable ones — and who carries each.

The calculation nobody shows you

Add up the items in the "you" column and compare them with what an agent charges for his information. In India several lakh for a promise is not unusual; in North Africa several months' salary. The official fees are almost always the smaller part. The large part is what somebody charges to explain how it works — and that is exactly what these pages give away for free.

The rule that beats everything else: you never pay for a job. Not to us, not to a representative, not "for processing", not "for registration". Anyone demanding money in our name is not working for us — and we want to know about it, anonymously if you prefer.
Unsure about someone? Seven questions, two minutes.

What is still coming — and what we deliberately do not write yet

We publish only what we have verified at the source. That is why there are three detailed chapters here and not thirty thin ones.

In preparation

• What is left of your salary? Gross, net, rent — with worked examples
• Family reunification step by step, by residence permit
• Your first month: registration, bank account, health insurance in the right order
• Per country: the routes to the mission and the typical waiting times

Why it takes time

On pay, rent and deadlines the internet carries a great many figures and very few sources. A wrong figure about a visa or a recognition is worse than no figure at all — it leads to an application that gets refused. So each chapter appears only with a source and a review date.
